Archaeology

Practical Sessions:

These sessions, including excavation, were featured in a trip to Stonehenge/Woodhenge where students liaised with the National Trust team and handled copies of artefacts.

Annual Exhibition:

The department hold their Annual Art Exhibition, Private View, for AS and A2 students in May. The exhibition includes the 'Fasset' of Langstone Technology Park (formerly IBM Havant) prize giving and Havant College prizes. Winners of the Fasset prize have their work showcased on the Fasset premises, where the Art Department co-ordinates a year long exhibition of the students work.

Commissioned Work:

In June, 'Fasset Open' took place, which was a working brief for students to produce commissioned work on a given theme.

Christmas Card Competition:

Every year our Art & Design students can enter our Christmas card competition. The winning design is then printed.

Gallery Displays:

The students work has been displayed in The West Downs Gallery in Winchester.

Guest Speakers:

Students attend talks and guest speakers are regularly invited into the studio. Last year Solent University gave a 3D Design talk where students were given an overview of courses and offered examples of work. Portsmouth University also gave a talk where career progression was discussed, giving students an overview of courses and offered examples of work.

Life Drawing Classes:

Classes are organised providing students with an opportunity to develop a portfolio of life drawing and supplement coursework and portfolio developments.

Visiting Artists:

The department regularly organises visiting artists to the studio. Last year students benefited from a workshop in using oil paints and a visit from internationally renowned David Samuels graffiti artist, TV personality and owner of Rarekind in Brighton giving a 'hands on' master class in graffiti graphics.

Business, Economics and Mathematics

Competitions:

For the last couple of years Maths students have taken part in the Senior Maths Challenge. Business students can also take part in the ACCA Business Challenge at Chichester University.

Lectures:

Students attended a subject presentation on Poverty & Inequality and a Magistrate's presentation.

Debate:

Students participated in the Poverty & Inequality debate.

English

Lectures:

Students attended a variety of different lectures to support the course. Recent lectures included The French Revolution by Mark Steele in Brighton.

Debating Group:

The debating group meet regularly. Each year students take part in the Mace Debating Trophy.

Exhibitions:

Last year students attended the Tutankhamen Exhibition at the O2 centre.

Guest Speakers:

Various guest speakers are invited in during the year to address students on curriculum related issues. These have included a Havant Fairtrade representative. Students also attended a lecture on Gender and Language at Portsmouth University.

Reviews:

Students of English Literature attended weekly “Film of the Book” sessions, to see a cinema film of a text relating to their studies. The most popular sessions were: Measure for Measure and Deathwatch; the latter is a recent horror genre film about the First World War.

Study Days:

Students attended a Study Day in London this year. The topics were literature about the First World War, the Romantic poets and Measure for Measure.

Theatre Trips:

Last year English Literature students saw Oh, What a Lovely War at the New Theatre Royal Plymouth where there was a Q and A session with the cast and director and Shakespeare's Much to do about Nothing at the National Theatre.

Government & Politics

Conferences:

Students attended the Annual Masterclass one day MPs Conference in London; many of the learners asked questions, including some to national figures.

Debates:

Students visited Parliament for a tour, a Mock Debate and a meeting with David Willetts, MP for Havant.

History

Lectures:

These have included a visit from Professor Harriet Evans, where students had a very stimulating experience; and an interactive lecture on the Chinese Cultural Revolution 1966-1976.

Study Day:

Students visited the Mary Rose Museum for an A Level study day, designed specifically for Havant College. This included high level source analysis and set up students for work experience at the museum during the summer holidays. Students also visited Kew and Hampton Court Palace to look at primary sources from the 1550s and later on had an interesting question and answer session with a history “interpreter” dressed up as Mary I.

ICT & Computing

Lectures:

Students had the opportunity to attend a Computer Science Lecture at the University of Southampton.

Languages

Theatre Trips:

Our French students were invited by The Modern Languages Department in Horndean Technology College, who were hosting the National Onatti Theatre Company performing a French play. The play was performed by professional actors and was targeted at a young audience learning French.

Workshops:

Translation workshops were held at Portsmouth University. All German and Spanish learners were allocated an email of an overseas correspondent in order to improve their written and communication skills.

Law, Business & Accounting

Guest Speakers:

These included a talk given by a Barrister regarding working in the Law. Students also attended a presentation and discussion by a team of Magistrates.

Visits:

Students attended Parliament during the year. Business and Acounting students took part in an ACCA Business Challenge, as well as visiting a manufacturing facility.

Leisure & Tourism

Fashion Show:

The students organise the Fashion Show as part of their coursework for Event Management. Each student was given their own role in organising the event which featured themed high street clothing lines from different types of holiday. Last year £800 was raised and donated to a local charity, The Rainbow Centre in Fareham which teaches children with Cerebral Palsy.

Mathematics

Lectures:

Maths students attended Maths Inspiration at Southampton's Turner Sims Concert Hall. Three experienced presenters talked about areas of maths – their talks were entitled Risk and Gambling, The Maths of Sports Stadiums and Maths, Creativity and Understanding.

Visits:

These include Alton Towers and being involved with Maths Inspirations.

Media, Film and Communication & Culture

Competitions:

Last year Communication & Culture students took part in the national competition BeCreative.

Exhibitions:

Students regularly attend exhibitions. Recently a group of students visited the Surrealism and Fantasy on the Southbank exhibition at the National Film Theatre: they also visited the Tate Modern and saw Beowulf in 3D at IMAX.

Film Screenings & Lectures:

The department regularly organised trips to cinema screenings and lectures. Recent films include This is England and Pan's Labyrinth.

Guest Speakers:

Katharine Meadows spoke to students on the value to undergraduates of having studied Communication Studies.

Music

In-House Productions:

The productions feature a live band in the February performances and Music Technology students operate the sound desk. Four very successful performances of Guys and Dolls provided musicians and singers with rehearsal and performance experience and others (non-musicians) with experience of stage management, lighting etc.

Music Lessons:

Some students opted to take on singing and instrumental lessons as an added enrichment activity.

Recording Studio:

The recording studio (with technician support) provides students with enrichment possibilities in music, e.g. some students use it (and the technician's expertise) to make CD recordings of their own bands.

Workshop:

DrumTech, a London based 'academy' of popular music, visited the College and gave a presentation on an insight into student life there. Ben MacPherson's Vocal Workshop on Gershwin Songs was offered to all Music and Performance Studies students which gave a better understanding of the songs' content/ message and how to deliver it in a practical performance. A workshop was also held in the understanding of harmony and the importance of it in the music profession.

Performing Arts

Talks With Casts:

Drama students attended a performance of Measure for Measure at Havant Arts Centre, performed by a new, local professional theatre company. The students were able to chat to the cast and director after the performance, providing a very useful opportunity for understanding Shakespeare's play. The students were also invited to attend a performance of Ibsen's The Wild Duck. This also featured a question and answer session with the cast and director after the performance.

Workshops:

Dance students spent the day at Chichester University College. It was a funfilled day of activities which included dance workshops, tours, talks and performances and enabled our students to experience 'a day in the life of' a performing arts undergraduate. Day of Dance at Kensington, Olympia, was a chance for Dance students to take part in practical workshops in a range of genres and to view several performances by performing arts schools and professional dance companies. Performing Arts students also attended a Matthew Bourne Repertoire workshop – gaining confidence and learning new skills.

Rock Challenge:

Many students have taken part in The Rock Challenge at the Guildhall, Portsmouth. This is a day of dance and performance with the opportunity to perform on the Guildhall Stage in front of a large audience.

Philosophy

Lectures:

Students attended a lecture on 'String Theory'; which aimed to introduce them to important ideas not encountered on the A Level course.

Psychology

Conferences:

Students attend a range of conferences. These included a residential two day conference at Leicester University on Forensic Psychology. Students heard from various speakers, for example Nick Yarris, who spoke about his time as a convict who spent over 8000 days on death row in the USA. He was one of the first ever to be released due to DNA evidence. Students heard from a Scene of the Crime Officer who talked about his role and also a Forensic Pathologist. Talks on Ballistics, Criminal Profiling and Female Prisoners completed a fascinating menu which students enjoyed. Students were also taken to an outstanding national conference where they enjoyed listening and participating in a range of topics presented by top UK and international psychologists.

Religious Studies

study days:

Students attended a study day organised by the Historical Association in conjunction with the Royal Palaces to the National Portrait Gallery and the Tower of London. Students also attended a one day conference at Chichester Cathedral to support Religious Studies.

talks:

Students visited the Methodist Central Hall in London in order to hear a variety of MPs give short talks – with question and answer sessions afterwards. A Funeral Director was invited to speak to students about death in different cultures.

Science

Students are encouraged to enter competitions to enrich their studies. Both Physics and Chemistry students entered the Olympiads. Physics also entered a team in the Renewable Energy Resources Challenge event held at Surrey University. The competition was marked over three sections: an energy quiz, generator power output and speed of turbine. The Havant team built the fastest turbine of all the 19 schools and colleges taking part in the event. The team also did well in the other two sections to finish a very creditable second place over all. The students won a prize of £20 each with a further £200 going to the Physics Department.

Guest Speakers:

Students attend talks on curriculum based topics. One of the biggest highlights of this year was in receiving another invite from the Royal Society which enabled some of our students to talk to the scientists doing cutting edge research. Also Health & Social Care students visited a Sure Start Centre that followed input from speakers from Sure Start, CYPP and Age Concern helping them to apply knowledge to written coursework about care practice and provision.

Open University Courses:

Some students take these interesting degree level modules as extensions to their regular studies. Previous modules have ranged from Archaeology, Astronomy, Forensic Science, Medicines and Drugs to Understanding the Weather. The majority of the work is done between July and the end of September with the assessment deadline in the middle of October.

Sociology

Guest Speaker:

These have included a local Police Constable who talked to students in relation to their Crime & Deviance module. This was very informative for all especially the Q & A session. Students attended a variety of lectures on Criminal Profiling and Stalking Culture. Criminology staff from Portsmouth University also gave an excellent talk in reference to both courses available and work done by the Criminology Department.
