Visiting Shanghai and Beijing among other destinations, students gained tremendous insight into their College studies that specifically focus on ‘China’ as a central element. Shanghai was included for the first time into the itinerary. A trip to the second highest skyscraper in the Pudong gave students breathtaking views of the 23 mile mega city. Staff marvelled at how quickly the area has grown and changed in the last decade. The group then travelled to Beijing by bullet train, which reaches speeds of 300kph, taking in historic sites, including the Great Wall. The group’s visit also coincided with the three day Tomb Sweeping Qingming holiday, giving them further insight into Chinese culture and celebration. We checked in and had some breakfast. We went through security and boarded our plane bound for Africa at 7:30am. The plane was small but the flight went well and we arrived at Banjul Airport in The Gambia at 1:30pm. After going through Gambian security and queuing for our coach to the hotel we were on our way. There were lots of porters at the coach trying to take your bags for money so we had to be quick to grab our own bags. We checked into our hotel, The Palma Rima, and got straight into the pool as it was so hot! The weather was beautiful and the people were lovely and very friendly. As evening came we met Mucki Bojang, our tour guide for the week and some of the teachers from the schools that we would be travelling to later in the week. We walked to the beach to a really nice restaurant for a Gambian buffet of rice, onion gravy, salads, chicken and fish. There were some...
