The A Level German students organised the event, inviting students from Springfield Technology College and the City of Portsmouth Girls School. The students showed two films, held presentations and discussions around the films as well as serving festive German food. It was a great opportunity for all parties concerned to learn, enjoy and achieve. Our students made the following comments: “Part of our Research in German A2 is to study a film. “Die Welle “and “Goodbye Lenin” are great films. They help us understand the issues and the emotions associated with German History, the war and the Berlin Wall. I really like History and I found that studying a film related to History is really enjoyable and puts everything in perspective for me. ” Dominic Mortimer, A2 German Level student. “I think it is really good to have...

The group visited Tiananmen Square in very cold conditions and trudged around the largest public space in the world (holding 500,00 people) to glimpse the entrance to the Forbidden City. The following day, we visited Mao Zedong's Mausoleum and stood in line to observe the local people still paying homage to the Chairman's embalmed corpse. We then headed to the Forbidden City where we had a highly instructive walking tour with a local expert who navigated us around the various courtyards –they were able to tread the very same environs that Empress Cixi lived and worked in and to see the spot where the Republic was proclaimed by Mao in 1949. In fact, the Qianmen Jianguo Hotel where we stayed hosted a Communist Party delegation including Mao himself in 1956. Afterwards,...

We all arrived in the car park bright and early to get the coach and, admired the breathtaking beauty of the countryside on the way. When we arrived, we were taken from the bitterness of the winter morning into a building next to Austen's house in which we were given a fascinating talk about Jane Austen's life and times. We were told, among other interesting things, that, after accepting a marriage proposal, Austen decided to refuse the man the next day and that therefore she never married. After we had been enriched with the knowledge of the time period in which Austen lived, we picked our way through remaining patches of snow to arrive at Jane Austen's house, which has been transformed into a museum to provide visitors with more information about certain artefacts and items of furniture. For example, we were privileged enough to come within touching distance of...
