Sustained Student Success at Havant College

[20 August 2009]

Students celebrating their A-Level results

Results published today indicate that yet again students from Havant College have achieved outstanding A Level results. With pass rates pushing 100% for the last six years.

A Level Results

A 97% pass rate was recorded with the majority of students achieving the tougher A to C grades at A Level. 47% of students achieved the high A – B grades which exceeds the national benchmark for 6th form colleges. 58% of A level subjects achieved a 100% pass rate.

Oxbridge Success

Havant College is proud to announce that all students who were offered conditional places at Oxbridge have achieved the grades needed for their course offers from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. They have been accepted to the very competitive fields of Economics, Law, Geography and Archaeology & Anthropology.

We were particularly delighted that Tom Durham, who will be reading Economics at Cambridge, achieved his phenomenal results whilst also having qualified for the Gold fleet in the 29th World Championships in Australia. His achievements have been recognised by Hampshire County Council when he received the Young Talented Athlete Award. He is also a Club Racing Coach and is a Junior Captain at his local sailing club.

Another student, Stephanie Taylor-Brown has achieved her predicted A grades to secure her place to study Medicine at the Brighton and Sussex Medical school. Stephanie has successfully divided her time between her studies and competitive figure skating, winning 43 medals. After recently competing in the British Championships she is now ranked 10th best in the country. Stephanie gets up at 3.30 a.m. four times a week to travel to Guildford and train and she is a volunteer at Basingstoke Ice Rink helping to coach young children. The College supported Stephanie and Tom in both their academic and sporting achievements so they could incorporate their studies and training.

In addition to achieving outstanding pass rates at A level, Havant College is proud that almost 700 A grade passes were recorded, with 107 Havant College students achieving 3 or more passes at grade A.

John McDougall, College Principal said "I am really pleased with these results which match those of 2008. Pass rates are good at 97% but as important, when university places are tight, is the number of students who achieved ‘A’ and ‘B’ grades at 47%. These are the grades which are the key to getting in to the best university places and once again we are above the Sixth Form sector average. Achieving exam success in this way will enable our students to fulfil their own ambitions. Congratulations to all Havant students for all their hard work and to our staff for producing yet again an excellent set of results."

The College takes achievement seriously and that means more than just academic success. Havant College believes all students should be supported individually in choosing the university course that is right for them and should have a lot of fun along the way.
