Aspire to University

We’re very proud of our students. They work hard, have high standards and really want to do the best in their studies and in life. So, if you’ve set your sights on a place at university, you’ll find plenty of people here who share your ambition. We have an excellent record of getting students onto their chosen courses at some of Britain’s most renowned universities.

High achievers:

Our Oxbridge record

Havant Sixth Form College has an excellent Oxbridge success rate with one in five applicants being offered a place. Oxbridge students are given additional support and guidance, together with advice and coaching on the application and interview process.

The Russell Group

Over 20% of our students who progress to university annually go to Russell Group universities. The Russell Group represents 24 leading UK universities which are committed to maintaining the very best research, an outstanding teaching and learning experience and unrivalled links with business and the public sector.

Many of our students choose university courses leading to professions such as medicine, veterinary science, engineering, accountancy, law or traditional academic subjects such as mathematics, economics, history, humanities and modern foreign languages. Others develop their artistic talents through art, design, media and drama degrees.

Universities think very highly of our students. Here are some of the quotes from those that attended our recent Higher Education and Employability Fair:

“Students were great. They were really eager to come and chat and find out more even if they weren’t sure what they wanted to do.” University of Nottingham

“The students were all very friendly and willing to listen to the information given - very willing to engage.” What Uni

“Good: very open-minded and interested in a range of courses.” London School of Economics

“The Recruitment and Outreach team at the University of Portsmouth believe that the Careers Team at Havant Sixth Form College offer a fantastic service to students with a well planned programme of support and guidance and a wide range of events to ensure that all students are supported in their plans for the future.” University of Portsmouth

Gap year

You may decide during your second year at College to defer entry to university, taking up a place the following year. You may even decide to use part of the gap year itself to make university decisions and we will fully support you with your application.

What our students get up to in their gap year is very diverse. Some spend the entire time working to save money for university while others spend some of the year on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. The majority actually do a combination of things and spend a multi-activity gap year, mixing paid employment with travel, volunteering or part-time study – and in some cases all of these things! The jobs can be fairly routine but sometimes can carry considerable responsibility. The following is just a selection of gap year activities our students have undertaken in the past couple of years:

Working as an intern at a business in Spain and volunteering at a games reserve

Applying for RAF as weapon technician

Working as a model, has been to Fashion Week in London, Paris & New York.

Applying for Animal Conservation Science at University of Cumbria whilst volunteering for RSPB as a guide and hiking the length of the Pacific Crest Trail
